IV therapy at home FAQs

To learn more about IV therapy at home and how Ellea Nursing can support you, please read our IV therapy care at home frequently asked questions (FAQs).

1. Who is suitable for IV therapy at home?

IV therapy at home is suitable for people who are clinically stable and need intravenous treatment, but don’t require continuous hospital monitoring.

Suitability is determined through a thorough clinical assessment, including a clear prescription and treatment plan from a lead physician, a confirmed diagnosis with a defined indication for IV therapy, stable clinical observations with no signs of acute deterioration, a safe home environment, the ability to provide informed consent and no need for complex acute monitoring requiring hospital care.

People who may be suitable include those receiving:

  • IV antibiotics
  • IV fluids for hydration
  • IV medications for chronic conditions
  • Nutritional or supportive therapies (as prescribed)

Every referral is individually risk assessed to ensure treatment can be delivered safely outside of hospital.

2. Is a referral required?

Yes. All IV therapy must be prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional. We’ll work closely with your lead physician to ensure care is delivered safely.

We require the below:

  •  A valid prescription
  • A clear clinical indication
  • Relevant medical history and allergy status
  • Agreed monitoring parameters
  • A documented escalation plan
3. Who delivers the IV therapy?

IV therapy is delivered by highly skilled registered nurses with advanced specialist expertise. Every nurse has up-to-date clinical competencies and must complete comprehensive mandatory training, including resuscitation and safe medicines management, so you can feel confident your loved one is always in safe, capable hands.

4. How quickly can care be arranged?

We move quickly. Once we receive a complete referral, care is arranged with pace and precision, guided by clinical urgency and the availability of medication and supplies. In many cases, treatment can begin within 24–72 hours, so your loved one receives the support they need without unnecessary delay.

5. Will the nurse monitor for side effects?

Yes, clinical monitoring is built into every visit. Our nurses carry out baseline and ongoing observations, staying alert for infusion reactions, adverse effects and early signs of line infection. Every IV site is carefully assessed and your loved one’s overall response to treatment is reviewed holistically at each visit.

If any concerns arise, they are escalated promptly to the prescribing clinician, with clear, agreed pathways in place to ensure a fast and appropriate response at all times.

6. Can IV therapy at home prevent hospital admission?

Yes. In many cases, home IV therapy can reduce or even prevent the need for hospital admission. It supports earlier discharge, helps lower the risk of hospital-acquired infections and allows your loved one to recover in the comfort and familiarity of home.

Your loved one’s safety is always our highest priority. If any signs of deterioration arise, our nurses act swiftly, escalating to hospital services without delay and following clear clinical pathways to ensure the right care is in place at the right time.

7. Will families be kept informed?

Yes, with your loved one’s consent. We believe open, honest communication is at the heart of great care, keeping families informed, reassured and supported every step of the way.

8. How much does a course of IV therapy cost?

Treatment costs are discussed individually at the point of referral, as pricing depends on the specific IV therapy prescribed and the complexity of care involved.

Fees typically cover nursing time and clinical monitoring, consumables, clinical equipment, medication costs and pharmacy dispensing or delivery charges, where applicable. A clear and detailed cost breakdown will always be provided before treatment begins, so you know exactly what to expect, with no surprises.

9. What type of IV access is used?
  • Peripheral cannulas
  • PICC lines
  • Midlines
  • Central venous catheters (CVC’s)
  • Porthacath
