Caring through the final chapter – Patricia’s story

As Patricia’s cancer progressed, being at home, safe, comfortable and surrounded by love, became possible with the right palliative care from Ellea Nursing.

Patricia was an extraordinary woman who was loving and deeply supportive to everyone around her. She worked in economics and banking, shared her knowledge as a teacher and then became a respected and passionate artist. Above all, she was a devoted mother and Robert’s soulmate of 42 happy years.

Life changed when Patricia became seriously unwell. What began with uncertainty soon became a devastating reality, after a physiotherapist urged Patricia to get an MRI, where tests revealed she had secondary breast cancer; a form of breast cancer that occurs when cancer spreads from the breast to other parts of the body and, while treatable, cannot currently be cured.

Secondary breast cancer affects tens of thousands of people across the UK and remains under-recognised.

After several months of intense cancer treatment, Patricia spent a number of weeks in The Royal Marsden, where doctors sadly confirmed that the treatment was no longer effective. Patricia met her devastating news with acceptance and strength. Her wish was simple: to live as fully and as comfortably as possible for as long as she could, surrounded by her family, in the comfort of her own home.

It was during this time that Robert was introduced to Ellea Nursing, who stepped in to support Patricia with palliative care at home. The team worked closely with the hospital and the oncology team to coordinate Patricia’s discharge, ensuring she could return home safely with the right support in place, to support her symptom management.

The difference Ellea Nursing makes

Throughout Patricia’s care at home, her comfort, dignity and peace of mind were always at the heart of her care.

A comprehensive 12-hour nursing package

Ellea’s nurses provided comprehensive care, while accompanying her to medical visits and on gentle walks. They managed the transition into end of life care and kept communication open, offering reassurance to Patricia and her family.

Providing palliative care at home

As Patricia’s diagnosis progressed, she required a feeding tube for up to 15 hours each day, medication management and constant clinical attention.

Compassionate care with dignity and respect

The nurses became trusted companions to Patricia and a source of support for the whole family, allowing Robert and their children to spend precious time with Patricia, sharing conversations, memories and moments of everyday joy.

A heartfelt reflection from Robert

For Robert, the impact of the care Ellea delivered has stayed with him long after Patricia’s passing.

He’s now channelling that experience into awareness and advocacy for others affected through the Patricia Swannell Appeal a legacy rooted in love and commitment.

“The support didn’t just make life bearable, it allowed us to have meaningful, honest conversations and be truly present with Patricia in the time we had left.”

Patricia’s legacy

Her vision lives on through her family. Robert continued the appeal, as he went on to form and chair a dedicated campaign board, raising funds for research into earlier diagnosis, better treatments, and ultimately, a cure. For Robert, this work is about keeping Patricia’s compassion and values alive; ensuring her kindness and courage continue to touch lives and offer hope to families facing secondary breast cancer.
