Sylvia’s story

Our specialist nurses and carers provide holistic, compassionate palliative and end-of-life care at home, prioritising comfort, dignity, and support for both you and your loved one.

Compassionate, palliative care, at home

Sylvia, a 76-year-old mother and grandmother from the Midlands, was enjoying her later years surrounded by her beloved family. Known for her warmth and sociable nature, she had recently been feeling more tired than usual, something her family noticed but didn’t see as cause for concern. That’s why her sudden diagnosis with advanced cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive cancer of the bile duct, came as a devastating and unexpected shock to Sylvia and her loved ones.

After being admitted to hospital, it was confirmed that the condition was not curative, given her fragility, oncology treatment was not an option.

The focus turned towards comfort, dignity, and calm. Sylvia had one simple but heartfelt wish: to return home and spend her final days
surrounded by the people she loved.

Dependable care you can trust

Responsive compassionate support

Understanding the urgency and sensitivity of Sylvia’s care, Ellea Nursing responded with speed, precision, and compassion. Our team coordinated a same-day
hospital discharge, working closely with the surgical and palliative care teams at Coventry Hospital, along with the district nursing team, Sylvia’s GP, and the local community palliative care team.

Around the clock care

From the moment of discharge, we provided a 24/7 nursing care package, ensuring that Sylvia received continuous expert support tailored to her complex needs. Our priority was to ensure that Sylvia was comfortable, safe, and able to spend meaningful time with her loved ones.

Care with dignity and warmth

Throughout, Sylvia’s care was delivered with the upmost clinical warmth, respect and dignity. While Sylvia herself didn’t have any specific preferences beyond being in
the comfort of her own home, her daughters played a key role in guiding the environment around their mother, making sure it was filled with peace and familiarity.

The difference Ellea Nursing makes

Ellea Nursing’s presence meant that the family could focus on cherishing their time together, with complete peace of mind that every clinical detail and every comfort was being attended to with care.

While implementing Sylvia’s care package, the team’s clinical expertise, clear communication and strong relationships with local healthcare partners, ensured her transition home was coordinated swiftly and seamlessly.

Above all, Ellea’s support provided more than just care, we offered comfort, reassurance, and a sense of calm during an immensely difficult time.

A heartfelt reflection from Sylvia’s loved ones

“The night Ellea Nursing brought Mum home from hospital was the first night I had slept in weeks knowing that Mum was safe and well cared for. The nurses couldn’t do enough for Mum, always making sure she was comfortable and treating her with so much compassion and dignity.

The level of speed and responsiveness was incredible – from Gemma visiting the hospital so early in the morning to ensure Mum could be discharged that very evening – I just can’t put it into words. Everything was done so quickly but so thoroughly. Nothing was missed. The level of knowledge and experience the team had filled us with confidence.

We couldn’t navigate this journey without Ellea Nursing. I don’t really know what we expected having never been through this before, but you’ve exceeded anything we could have imagined. You’re enabling us to cherish the time we have left with Mum.”
